The experience of viewing Yu Shan's painting is like that of climbing a high mountain or sauntering in the wilderness. It brings one back to nature. It evokes a nostalgic feeling in the viewer as does poetry. In fact poetry is what the painter intends to imbue in his work.
Yu Shan's style is reflective of his experiences with nature.Without contrived structure and coloration, but plain and solid strokes of paint he captures the fleeting beauty of a moment, realizing nature's breadth and depth and it's enthralling splendor.
During his twenty years of living abroad Yu Shan has traveled to every corner of the world, witnessed and felt the traces left by the ravage of time. A poignant realization enlightened his search for a personal expression and vocabulary. His paintings are bold, strong and transcend national boundaries. They also emit an aura of primitiveness.
Yu Shan's favorite subject is mountain. Coincidentally his given name, "Shan," means "mountain".His unique response to natural scenery is lodged in his portrayal of lofty mountains, precipitous cliffs, and abysmal ravines.
In 1986 Yu Shan went to the United States as a graduate student.Three years later he received his Master of Fine Art degree in Boston University. In the past twenty years he has created a large corpus of work including paintings on canvas, mural paintings and large-scale environmental art designs. He has exhibited in many countries and avidly collected by art collectors. He is the only member of Asian descent in the American Society of Mural Painters. He has studios in Boston,Los Angeles and Shanghai. His scores of murals have graced more than a dozen museums in the United States. Some said that the Science Museum in Boston was Yu Shan's permanent exhibition hall. These accomplishments warranted Yu Shan entries every year in “Who's Who In America”, and “Who's Who in American Art”.
